Malaika Kids has a new model to care for Tanzanian orphans, offering them a home where they are safe, receive proper nutrition, go to school, have the opportunity to learn a trade and develop into responsible, independent adults.
As soon as an orphan is placed in our care and safely housed in our Reception Home in Dar es Salaam, we try to locate family members who may be able to provide a home for the child. Wherever possible a child is placed with his wider family. Usually the family will receive ongoing support from Malaika Kids, most likely comprising food, school uniform & books and transport costs. Malaika Children's Village Where no suitable foster home can be found, the child moves to our Malaika Children's Village which is designed around family houses and will eventually accommodate 320 children. Each family house comprises 10 children - 5 girls, 5 boys - from age 1 to 20 years old cared for by a house mother, replicating as far as possible a normal family structure of 'brothers' and 'sisters'. We were honoured by the President performing the official opening of the Village in July 2010. Organisation Malaika Kids is a growing international network of charities. Malaika Kids Tanzania is responsible for delivering the children's care and our policy is that it should be staffed by local people. Our registered charities in the UK, USA and Netherlands raise funds to support these activities and provide the overall strategy, planning, monitoring and financial control to ensure that money is well spent. These charities have no paid staff, so that virtually all the money raised goes into the project in Tanzania. Tiny overhead costs To us, it is crucial that donations are spent on what they were intended for - the orphans of Tanzania. For that reason all activities outside Tanzania are carried out by volunteers who pay their own way, the result of which is that we have miniscule levels of cost. Also a growing number of companies support Malaika Kids by providing their knowledge, products and / or manpower free of charge. Why choose Malaika Kids? We promise that all the money we receive from your fundraising efforts will go to Malaika Kids Tanzania to pay for the orphans' care. We have no paid staff in the UK, we are all volunteers and our administrative costs are tiny. Malaika Kids sources supplies and staff, wherever possible, locally in Tanzania, which means that you are also supporting the wider Tanzanian community. We are a small and friendly team and will provide you with a close community of support as you fundraise! Where Will Your Money Go? The money we raise in 2010 and 2011 will be used for: - The running costs of the Children's Village in Mkuranga and the Reception Home in Dar es Salaam - Growing our Relatives Support Programme where orphaned children are fostered in the community by extended family - Building the next phase of our Children's Village.
